Elaine and I talk about a living in a tiny trailer, so I thought I would write a post to give you more perspective on our version of “tiny.”
When we first started to think about operationalizing our idea of a two-month camping trip, I started looking for a trailer which would give us a little bit more space and separation on the inside. It was important to Elaine and me to keep the overall length of the trailer as small as possible in order be able to fit into small campgrounds and to keep parking the trailer an enjoyable experience.
After much research we landed on a fiberglass Escape 5.0 fifth wheel trailer. It’s called a fifth wheel trailer because the trailer attaches to our truck in the bed of truck as opposed to a regular trailer which attaches to the bumper.
Our trailer is about 22 ft long and about 7 ft wide. It has most of the modern day comforts - bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, dining room etc. however, they are all packed into one 150 square foot space. The ultimate in multi-functional floor space.
Here is the floor plan:
Here is what the trailer looks like from the outside:
When you enter the trailer, there are 3 steps off to the right which rise up to the “bedroom” - we have to climb up the steps to get into the bed.
Here is a view from the bedroom:
And another view of Elaine at work with help from Liza the dog:
The good news is our trailer has a bathroom, albeit very small. With the door shut, I can sit down and stand up and that is about all. No complex dance moves, certainly no pirouettes. But that would be weird anyway so we won’t go there.
The bathroom is designed as a “wet bath” which means you can take a shower in it. It has a shower curtain which covers up the towel racks and an innovative toilet paper holder which keeps the toilet paper from getting wet. More often than not, if the campground has a shower house, we opt for that.
I love giving tours of our trailer to friends and family and fellow campers. Most people remark on the beauty of the natural wood finishes and how efficient and functional the floor plan is. But some people, while they are saying nice things, their eyes are saying, “No f@#!% way could I live in this thing!” I get it…it’s not for everyone.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
